AI Sauna was an event held in Helsinki, Finland, in May 2024, that brought together experts in Open Culture (like Wikimedia, Creative Commons) with Finnish memory institutions to explore and foster collaboration on the integration of Artificial Intelligence into the future of shared cultural heritage. It was a co-creation event that included inspiring talks and hands-on activities to generate ideas and outputs related to AI’s impact on open cultural data.
Key Aspects of the AI Sauna Event
- Purpose: To brainstorm and create tangible outputs regarding the role of AI in the realm of open cultural heritage.
- Organizers: Hosted by AvoinGLAM, with participation from various organizations representing open culture and Finnish cultural institutions.
- Activities: The two-day event featured inspiring talks, discussions on AI’s impact on shared online culture, and a “hack day” at a location called Maria01 for hands-on exploration of AI technologies.
- Focus: The event centered on the intersection of GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums), Open Culture, and AI, aiming to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and AI developers.
- Outcome: Participants exchanged ideas and generated potential project ideas and strategies for the future of cultural heritage in the age of AI.
