AvoinGLAM

AvoinGLAM is a collective under the auspices of Open Knowledge Finland, dedicated to promoting Open Access to cultural heritage. Our mission is to make GLAM activities (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) more inclusive, diverse, and accessible to everyone.

We promote the participation of diverse cultural and linguistic communities in digital cultural heritage, not only institutions. From this perspective, we wish to interpret the acronym GLAM as Global Languages, Art & Memory.

To achieve this, we create and advocate for building blocks for responsible sharing in collaboration with our global networks – novel labeling practices that take into account a more nuanced approach to open sharing, or platforms and projects for collaboratively crafting the open digital ecosystem, such as our Wikidocumentaries.

We also do events and projects with skill sharing and co-creation around digital culture. The Hack4FI cultural hackathons have paved the way for the Hack4OpenGLAM events and the recent AI Sauna.

We function at the intersection of Wikimedia, Creative Commons and Open Knowledge, advocating for the cultural commons – collaboration across organizational and domain boundaries to create an interoperable, vibrant and responsible open culture ecosystem.

AvoinGLAM has been established in 2012, and it has been supported by a Wikimedia Foundation Community Fund since 2022.
