OKFI and friends hosted the 2024 OKFI Winter Festival on 2 December at URBAN3 with a lovely open knowledge crowd joining the event.

AI 💖 regulation

The highlight of the program was the panel discussion on AI 💖 regulation with Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, Member of the Finnish Parliament, ex-MEP, Minna Mustakallio Head of Responsible AI, Yle, Nitin Sawhney Professor of Practice, Aalto CRAI-CIS Research Group, Tapani Tarvainen Executive Director, Electronic Frontier Finland, moderated by Tarmo Toikkanen Senior Lead, Data and AI programme, Sitra.

We at Open Knowledge Finland spiced up our statement for the request for comments regarding the implementation of the AI Act in Finland with takeaways from the panel discussion.

Welcome Marja Pirttivaara, the new Chair of OKFI

Marja Pirttivaara (PhD, MBA) has a long experience in the public as well as private sectors with a career as Senior Lead at Sitra. Marja is also known for her active role in promoting open data and advancing scientific communities. Her expertise spans technology, science, culture, finance, and practical applications of knowledge.

At the same time, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mehalet Yared, our outgoing chair, you for your leadership and dedication! We are delighted to continue working together as we embark on exciting new horizons and opportunities!

Best Open Knowledge Thesis Award to Annastiina Ahola

M. Sc. Annastiina Ahola (Aalto University, Department of Computer Science) was awarded for her thesis Developing a tool for information retrieval and research purposes utilizing BookSampo data.

Open Knowledge Finland ry annually awards the Best Open Knowledge Thesis of the previous year. We hope the award encourages students to conduct research in one of the many aspects of open knowledge.

Creative Commons Finland Reboot

Creative Commons Finland Reboot gathered a dozen guests in sketching out CC Finland’s activities.

  • Promote correct licensing in open culture. Advocate for Open Access policies for cultural heritage institutions.
  • Promote CC licenses, perhaps offer training.
  • Stay up-to-date on Creative Commons international work in the Open Culture PlatformCopyright Platform, and the Open Education Platform. 💡Join the platforms!
  • Support the work with TAROCH.
  • Learn about CC strategy update to inform our activities.

Greetings from Creative Commons

Brigitte Vézina, Director of Policy at Creative Commons, sent her greetings to greet the CC Finland Reboot meeting and to highlight the TAROCH initiative (Towards A Recommendation on Open Cultural Heritage) for the Winter Festival guests.

The TAROCH initiative is conducted by Creative Commons to create a global recommendation for public domain culture. The number of participating organizations is steadily growing with 31 organizations from around the world involved currently. AvoinGLAM, the National Library of Finland, and the Music Archive Finland have joined as founding members and wish to facilitate Finland taking an active role in the initiative.

Johanna Lilja, Director of Services at the National Library of Finland shared their perspective, highlighting especially how AI will be affecting the attitude of organizations going open in the future.
